…..The downturn in the economy last year has prompted many companies to make widely publicized layoffs, resulting in thousands of lost jobs. Economists predicted that these layoffs would cause people generally to cut back on their discretionary spending even if their jobs were secure, in anticipation of coming hard times. However, this prediction has not come to pass, since there has been no increase in the amount of money set aside by the general public in savings accounts.
….

whats the meaning of to make widely publicized ??

whats the meaning of cut back on their discretionary spending ?

has not come to pass what it means ?

This paragraph is heavily confusing to me :(

someone please simplify the overall meaning …..especially the last line is too complex to understand.

what they are trying to say ?

How is the travel industry being affected by the state of the U.S. economy?

gamerbunny asked:

Since I travel a lot, domestically and internationally, I am already conscious of the exchange rates from country to country and inflation. The U.S. dollar doesn’t buy as much elsewhere as it does at home.

The downturn of the U.S. economy got me to thinking about more things than just currency exchange rates.

How much (or little) are travelers traveling now and how much (or little) do you think they will travel in the coming years?

Are travelers choosing to travel domestically over internationally because of cost? Or because of the uncertainty of their economic future?

What can travel companies do to lure in more customers? Give them incentives? Cheaper prices?

How about international travelers coming to the U.S.? Are they coming to the U.S. because the currency exchange is favorable?

Any information or links are appreciated.
Note: I don’t work in the travel industry. I’m just a student that travels frequently.
